One of the main reasons I like to Geocache is the opportunity to visit certain locations where previously I would not normally have ventured.
So on a sunny June day I found myself with a little time to kill and enough of a gap in my schedule to haul myself of the to Dover and a closer look at the much fabled ‘white cliffs’
An iconic British Landmark, my visit was made a little more poignant due to recent passing of Vera Lynn who of course sang about this majestic location.
Being a National Trust member, entry was of course free and I found ample car parking on site.
A gift shop and cafe are a welcome find as are more benches and places to sit and gaze into the deep blue yonder than you could shake a stick at. It really is a remarkable place to come and walk.
Its possible to walk along the cliff top to the Lighthouse (takes around 40 mins) and there is a wheelchair friendly footpath that leads to a viewing point, ideal if you just want a short walk to see the iconic cliffs. This all weather path is built with a staggered incline, allowing a few breathers on the way up and is ideal if the weather is bad. At the top is one of the best views of the cliffs with the rolling green hilltops and sheer chalk edge, dropping to the sea below.
There is also the chance to visit second world war tunnels (unfortunately closed at the time of my visit due to Covid-19), ship wrecks on the beach below and of course the busy port of Dover just below;
But of course I was here to Geocache and after grabbing the Earth at the visitor centre I hoovered up a few more in a delightful walk along the cliffs in the sun.
A really remarkable place that I would encourage anyone to visit, Geocache or Not, I will certainly be returning!
