History, a Geocaching, Chocolate promotion – https://geocaching.co.uk/features/thorntons-easter-geocaching-giveaway/
Outcome? A complete shambles.
Not through any wrong going of the organisers, the cache setters or indeed Thorntons, but by the Geocachers who systematically ruined what should have been a great game and fun for children as well as a great advertisement for Geocaching.
I tried gallantly to keep the promotion out of the UK Geocaching Facebook group but unfortunately the information was ‘leaked’ and soon it was the hot topic of discussion. The ‘go-live’ date was discussed and unbelievably the cachers on there were chomping at the bit to go and find the prizes, which, lets not forget, consisted of a simple chocolate egg. By midday on the first day, before the promotion company had even had a chance to hit social media with the idea, the caches had been found. I couldn’t believe it. I took a journey up to my cache to see if it had gone and was dismayed to see it had. I have marked the cache though, so I will know if I ever see it again 🙂
Conclusion? Some geocachers have ruined what could have been a lot of fun for the children it was angled at. If anyone runs a similar promotion again, I would suggest that you tell as little people as possible!
